HARRIS LAMB SECURES OVER 170MW OF BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SITES AS PARTNERS WORK TOWARD NET ZERO BY 2050

Planning and ecology specialists at Harris Lamb have been working closely with Anglo Renewables to secure Battery Energy Storage Sites across the UK to support the country’s legislated target of reaching Net Zero by 2050.

Since October 2022, the business has secured permission for more than 170mw of Battery Energy Storage Sites (BESS) throughout the UK, often within sensitive locations including Green Belt areas and in close proximity to heritage assets.

The UK government estimates technologies such as battery storage systems – supporting the integration of more low-carbon power, heat and transport technologies – could save the UK energy system up to £40 billion by 2050, thereby resulting in a dramatic reduction in people’s energy bills.

Paul Barton, of Harris Lamb’s Planning Consultancy, said: “With 200mw of storage currently in the planning system, and more being prepared, Harris Lamb is proud to be playing its part in reducing climate change and securing affordable energy as we work alongside multiple partners in a bid to meet the government’s Net Zero targets.

“This has involved close cooperation with development teams and council officers as we look to  minimise and mitigate any impacts these BESS projects might have, while striving to manage the supply and demand issues involved. As part of the global movement to tackle climate change, it is essential that we continue to work together with land owners, network operators and other stakeholders to identify, secure and help to deliver successful projects of this nature across the country,” he said.

James Stone, Managing Director at Anglo Renewables, said: “Harris Lamb’s expertise has enabled us to achieve consents in challenging locations. These projects will help us take key steps towards delivering sustainable solutions and helping combat climate change. We look forward to continuing this relationship to deliver further successful projects to help meet our Net Zero targets.”
