A former retail unit in Macclesfield is set to be transformed into a stylish café bar, having been let to Loungers PLC, operators of the popular Cosy Club and Lounge chains.

Commercial agents at Harris Lamb have let the former Poundland site on Mill Street to Loungers PLC on a 17-year lease.

Mike Burr, who oversaw the letting, said: “This opportunity attracted a huge amount of interest from potential occupiers due to its location in a thriving area of the town.

“A two-storey, double fronted unit with a 9,785 sq ft floor plate, the unit is positioned in the main pedestrianised retail area of Macclesfield, beside the Grosvenor shopping scheme, and therefore attracts significant levels of footfall from shoppers.”

Macclesfield’s town centre retail offering is centred around Mill Street and Chestergate with the Grosvenor Shopping Centre linking the two main retail high streets, with occupiers including Superdrug, Mountain Warehouse, TK Maxx, Clarkes, Waterstones, Fat Face, Pandora and a number of independent retailers.

“Mill Street has a very high footfall, and lends itself perfectly to a business of this kind. Already, Macclesfield has a diverse range of independent and national coffee shops, restaurants, bars and cafés, and this venue will be a fantastic addition to the town.

“Loungers has 244 sites across the UK, encompassing the popular Lounge Café Bar, Cosy Club and Brightside Roadside Dining brands.

“Having recognised that Macclesfield would be an ideal fit for its portfolio with the town already playing host to key events such as the monthly Treacle Market, and Macclesfield Beer Festivals, the business sought a suitable space for its next venture and 18-22 Mill Street absolutely fit the bill,” said Mike.

Tom Foley, Asset Manager for landlords Calthorpe Estates, said: “To secure a tenant as well regarded as Loungers in the current economic climate is a real testament to the professional teams on both sides.

“Everyone worked together seamlessly to achieve a great outcome for all parties. Loungers are a proven operator who I am certain will be very successful once they begin trading in early 2024.

“It has been a pleasure to work closely with Loungers throughout this transaction and I look forward to them breathing life into a vacant property in such a prominent location.”

Loungers will now fit out the premises in its signature style, with a view to opening early next year.
